Description

Honeywell FC-TSRO-0824 | 8-Channel Safe Relay Output FTA

Dynamic Product Introduction

The important engineering distinction is the word relay. FC-TSRO-0824 is not another 24 VDC transistor-output termination assembly. It is a safe dry digital output FTA with relay switching, intended to provide floating field contacts for safety-system applications.

Honeywell specifies eight output channels, each capable of switching up to 250 VAC or 250 VDC within the published load limits. The nominal input to the FTA is 24 VDC, with a specified relay pick-up voltage of 19.2 VDC. The output side is isolated/floating rather than being a common 24 VDC solid-state source.

That makes FC-TSRO-0824 useful where the field device requires a relay contact interface rather than a direct 24 VDC solid-state output. It is also why FC-TSRO-0824 should not be substituted blindly for FC-TSDO-0824. The latter is a solid-state 24 VDC safe digital output FTA; TSRO-0824 is relay-contact hardware.

Honeywell’s documentation places TSRO-0824 in the Safe Manager FTA family and describes it as a safe dry digital output FTA for SIL3 applications.

These specifications are taken from Honeywell’s Safety Manager hardware documentation. The 5 A rating is a fused output rating, not a blanket statement that every connected load may be switched at 5 A under every operating condition. Honeywell specifies a load limit of 1250 VA / 150 W, and the published fuse derating must also be considered.

System Architecture and Compatibility

The functional concept is:

Safety Manager output system → SICC/interconnection → FC- → external relay-switched field load

The FC-TSDO-0824 and FC- should not be treated as interchangeable simply because both have eight output channels.

The distinction is:

FC-TSDO-0824: solid-state 24 VDC safe digital output interface.

relay-based safe dry digital output interface.

For applications requiring a floating relay contact, the TSRO architecture is the relevant one. Honeywell’s certification documentation explicitly categorizes FC- as a relay output FTA for SIL3 applications.

The exact Safety Manager hardware configuration should be checked before installation, particularly the associated output module, system interconnection cable, FTA revision, field wiring, and safety application configuration.

Global Sourcing & Live-Test SOP

Inbound Verification

For an incoming FC-:

  • Confirm the exact marking .
  • Verify the FC conformal-coated construction.
  • Record the hardware/revision marking.
  • Check the Honeywell identification label and traceability information.
  • Inspect all eight output terminal groups.
  • Inspect the relay/output circuitry for physical damage.
  • Inspect the eight fused output paths.
  • Check the interconnection connector for bent or recessed contacts.
  • Inspect the DIN-rail mounting mechanism.
  • Confirm the unit is not a different TSRO/TRO/TSDO family device.

Honeywell identifies the FC version separately from FS-, with the FC designation corresponding to conformal-coated construction.

Live Simulation

A meaningful functional test should use a compatible Safety Manager output configuration.

For each channel, verify:

  • Correct relay energization.
  • Correct relay de-energization.
  • Correct output contact state.
  • Correct field-terminal mapping.
  • Correct fuse continuity.
  • Correct response to the Safety Manager command.
  • No unexpected contact resistance or intermittent operation.

Because this is relay hardware, the test should evaluate both the energized and de-energized states.

Contact and Load Verification

Use an appropriate controlled test load rather than connecting an operational plant actuator simply to prove the relay works.

Verify:

  • Normally-open contact behavior.
  • Contact continuity when energized.
  • Open-circuit behavior when de-energized.
  • Contact resistance where appropriate.
  • Correct response under a representative load.
  • Fuse operation and rating.

For high-current or inductive loads, apply the site-approved suppression and load-protection arrangement. Do not assume that the published 5 A fuse rating means an inductive solenoid or contactor can be operated at 5 A without additional engineering review.

Final Preparation

Record:

  • Exact model:
  • Hardware/revision
  • FC coating status
  • Eight-channel functional test results
  • Fuse inspection results
  • Contact-state measurements
  • Test load
  • Associated Safety Manager hardware
  • Any anomalies found during testing

Protect the relay/terminal assembly from impact and moisture during ESD-safe packaging.

Field Engineer’s Pitfall Guide

❗ Do not confuse FC- with FC-TSDO-0824.

This is the most likely substitution error.

FC- = relay output FTA.

FC-TSDO-0824 = solid-state 24 VDC output FTA.

The TSRO device provides relay-switched field contacts, while the TSDO family is designed around solid-state 24 VDC output. The two serve different field-interface requirements.

❗ Do not treat 5 A as an unrestricted load rating.

Honeywell specifies a 5 A fused output, but also limits the maximum switched load to 1250 VA / 150 W. The fuse derating curve is specified from 5 A at 25°C down to 3.5 A at 70°C module ambient.

A field engineer looking only at “5 A” can therefore overestimate what the assembly can safely switch in a hot cabinet.

❗ Check the relay load type, not just voltage.

A 250 VAC/DC maximum rating does not mean that every 250 V load is equivalent.

Motor starters, solenoid coils, contactors, lamps, heaters, and electronic loads have different switching characteristics. Inductive loads can produce substantial transient energy and can materially reduce relay-contact life if suppression is not correctly engineered.

Intent-Driven FAQ

What is Honeywell FC-?

It is an 8-channel Safe Dry Digital Output Field Termination Assembly with relay outputs for the Honeywell Safety Manager system. Honeywell rates the family for applications up to and including SIL3.

Is FC- a solid-state output?

No. The TSRO designation identifies the relay-output architecture. It should not be represented as a standard transistor or solid-state 24 VDC output assembly.

How many output channels does FC- have?

It provides 8 output channels.

What voltage can FC- switch?

Honeywell specifies a maximum output voltage of 250 VAC / 250 VDC. The maximum switched load is specified separately as 1250 VA / 150 W.

What is the maximum output current?

The published maximum output current is 5 A, fused. The actual permitted load must also comply with the specified voltage, switched-power, temperature, and fuse limitations.

What is the input voltage?

The nominal input is 24 VDC, with a maximum input voltage of 36 VDC and relay pick-up voltage of 19.2 VDC.

Is FC- suitable for SIL3 applications?

Honeywell’s hardware reference states that the is a safe dry digital output FTA for applications up to and including SIL3. The certification release list also identifies the FC version specifically as a digital output relay FTA for applications.

What is the difference between FC- and FS-?

They are two variants. The FC version is conformal-coated, while the FS version is the corresponding non-conformal-coated variant. Honeywell’s certification list identifies FC- part number 3440761 and a later 3440767 / CC V1.1 revision.
