Description

NEC FC-9821X | 486DX2 66MHz Industrial PC

Dynamic Product Introduction

When an old production machine stops running, replacing its computer with the newest industrial PC is often the wrong first move. The difficult part is preserving the software, expansion hardware, storage format, display behavior, and timing characteristics that the original automation system was built around.

The NEC FC-9821X was introduced in February 1995 as a dedicated factory computer. NEC specifies a write-back enhanced i486DX2 running at 66 MHz, with model 1 and model 2 configurations. Standard memory was approximately 1.6 MB, with expansion capability reaching 95.6 MB according to the documented hardware configuration.

The graphics architecture is also significant. The FC-9821X integrates a Cirrus Logic GD5430-based window accelerator with 1 MB VRAM, while the system provides the characteristic PC-9821 display environment required by many period applications. This is one reason a generic x86 replacement cannot automatically be considered a drop-in substitute.

Storage was configurable. NEC documented a dedicated FC-9821X-E02 340 MB fixed-disk drive, while the system could also accommodate an additional 3.5-inch floppy drive through the FC-9821X-E01 option. The FC-9821X could also be fitted with a 19-inch rack-mount mechanism for industrial installations.

For maintenance teams, the value of an FC-9821X today is therefore not modern processing performance. It is compatibility. When an existing inspection machine, test station, manufacturing cell, or legacy automation workstation depends on this architecture, preserving the original platform can avoid a much larger migration project.

One important procurement detail: NEC identifies FC-9821X/1 and FC-9821X/2 separately in its lifecycle documentation. Do not purchase a unit based solely on the “FC-9821X” family designation when the existing installation depends on a particular configuration.

Global Sourcing & Live-Test SOP

A used FC-9821X should be evaluated as an industrial system component, not as an ordinary vintage computer.

Inbound Verification

Start with physical identification.

Record the model designation, serial number, chassis label, installed memory, expansion boards, storage devices, internal cabling, and any option labels. Photograph the configuration before removing covers.

NEC’s documented option list includes FC-9821X-E01, FC-9821X-E02, FC-9821X-B01, and FC-9821X-U01. These are not interchangeable accessories from a procurement perspective; each relates to a specific function of the FC-9821X platform.

Check for battery leakage, swollen capacitors, corrosion, damaged connectors, cracked PCB solder joints, contaminated cooling paths, and evidence of previous board-level repair.

Live Simulation

A meaningful acceptance test should include:

  • AC power-up
  • POST/startup verification
  • RAM recognition
  • Display output
  • Keyboard operation
  • Floppy-drive operation
  • Fixed-disk detection where installed
  • Expansion-card recognition
  • Serial-interface testing where required
  • Extended operating test

If the customer’s original application is available, use it.

A machine that merely reaches a startup screen has not necessarily passed a production replacement test. In legacy automation, application compatibility is often the real acceptance criterion.

Diagnostics

Use a calibrated digital multimeter to verify supply rails and investigate abnormal voltage behavior.

Inspect the power supply under operating conditions rather than relying only on an unloaded voltage reading. Check fans, electrolytic capacitors, storage connectors, ribbon cables, expansion-card seating, and signs of thermal deterioration.

For serial-controlled equipment, reproduce the actual communication parameters. Verify baud rate, parity, stop bits, and flow-control requirements. A communication port that responds to a generic loopback test may still fail when connected to the original machine.

For storage, identify the actual installed drive and controller. NEC specifically documented the 340 MB FC-9821X-E02 fixed-disk option, so a unit with a different storage arrangement requires separate compatibility verification.

Final Prep

Before shipment, document:

  • Exact FC-9821X configuration
  • RAM capacity
  • Installed storage
  • Expansion-board inventory
  • Display output
  • Boot behavior
  • Floppy operation
  • Interface test results
  • Cosmetic condition
  • Any observed limitations

Package the chassis with ESD protection and sufficient mechanical cushioning. Legacy expansion cards and storage hardware should not be allowed to move inside the chassis during transportation.

For surplus procurement, “tested” should always have a defined meaning. Record what was actually tested.

The Field Engineer’s Pitfall Guide

❗ Do Not Confuse FC-9821X Model 1 and Model 2

NEC explicitly documents FC-9821X model 1 and FC-9821X model 2. The two configurations have different storage arrangements: model 1 provides a file-bay configuration, while model 2 incorporates a dedicated hard-disk slot.

I’ve seen legacy replacement jobs delayed because procurement matched the front-panel model number while nobody checked the internal storage configuration.

Photograph the original chassis and installed boards before ordering.

❗ Do Not Assume Modern RAM or Storage Is a Direct Substitute

The documented FC-9821X memory architecture is specific to this generation of NEC factory computer. NEC specifies approximately 1.6 MB standard memory, with expansion to 95.6 MB using supported memory configurations.

Likewise, the documented FC-9821X-E02 is a dedicated 340 MB fixed-disk option. A physically similar drive does not automatically mean electrical, firmware, or boot compatibility.

❗ Preserve the Original Software and Hardware Configuration

Before removing a functioning FC-9821X, capture the complete system image where technically possible.

Record expansion-card positions, cable routing, drive configuration, BIOS/system settings, and application startup behavior. I’ve seen plants lose days because the replacement hardware was sound but the original application depended on a configuration nobody documented.

The safest strategy is to preserve the original unit intact until the replacement has passed an application-level test.

Intent-Driven FAQ

Is the NEC FC-9821X still manufactured?

No. NEC’s lifecycle records show the FC-9821X was discontinued with shipment ending in June 2000, followed by service ending in June 2006. Current availability is therefore dependent on legacy inventory and replacement sourcing.

Can I replace an FC-9821X with a modern industrial computer?

Technically, a migration can be engineered. It should not be described as a simple drop-in replacement.

The original application may depend on PC-9821 graphics behavior, legacy storage, expansion boards, operating-system drivers, or specific interface timing. If production continuity is the immediate objective, a tested FC-9821X can be the lower-risk maintenance option.
