Code editor or text editor:
The code editor is used for writing programs. The uVision editor includes all standard features, such as highlighting syntax in colors and quickly identifying errors. The editor can be used for debugging. A natural debugging environment helps you quickly identify and correct errors in your program. After writing your program in the code editor, save the file as either .asm or .C format, depending on your chosen assembler.
Assembler:
An assembler is used to convert source code (low-level language) into machine-level (binary format).
Compiler:
A compiler is used to convert source code (high-level language) into machine-level (binary format).
Create the first file using a DOS editor or another editor.
The assembler will generate object files and a list of files. The object files have the extension “.obj”, while the list files have the extension “.lst”.
The third step that the assembler needs to perform is called linking. The linker takes one or more object files and generates an object file with the extension “.abs”.
Inputting the “.abs” file into a program called OH (Target to Hex Converter ) will create a file with the “.hex” extension, which can be written directly to the microcontroller’s ROM .
Burner/Programs:
Programming or burning a microcontroller means “transferring the program from the compiler to the microcontroller’s memory.” The microcontroller’s program is typically written in C or assembly language, and the compiler eventually generates a hexadecimal file containing machine language instructions (such as zeros and instructions the microcontroller can understand). It is this transfer of the microcontroller’s contents that makes it work; once the program is in the microcontroller’s memory, it operates according to that program.
How to program a microcontroller?
A microcontroller is an integrated chip in which we store code written in assembly language. Therefore, to dump the coded program into a microcontroller IC, we need a device called a CD burner or programmer. A programmer is a hardware device with software that reads the contents of a hexadecimal file stored on a PC or laptop . It reads the hexadecimal file data serially or via USB cable and transfers the data to the microcontroller’s memory.
The programmer and compiler differ for different microcontrollers, and this also varies from company to company. For example, “Flash Magic” is used to program the 8051 microcontroller, while “Programmer” is used to program the AT89C51 microcontroller. This is how we program code in microcontrollers that come with a burner or programmer.
