Description

Mitsubishi HA-SC23 | 200W AC Servo Motor

Product Introduction

The Mitsubishi HA-SC23 is a 200 W MELSERVO-SC AC brushless servo motor intended for closed-loop industrial motion systems. Mitsubishi’s original documentation places the HA-SC23 in the HA-SC family alongside the MR-SC20 amplifier, while Mitsubishi’s later migration guidance specifically identifies the HA-SC23 as a motor that can be paired with an MR-H20AN when using the appropriate migration configuration.

This is legacy motion-control hardware, so the important buying question is not simply whether the shaft turns. The motor’s encoder feedback, amplifier compatibility, connector arrangement, mechanical mounting, and machine parameters all have to line up. The HA-SC23 uses a 2000 P/R encoder, with the original MR-SC system treating the motor feedback as 8000 pulses per revolution for positioning calculations.

For retrofit work, retaining the original motor can be considerably simpler than changing the complete mechanical and electrical motion architecture. Mitsubishi itself lists HC-MF23 as the current-motor replacement reference for HA-SC23 in its MR-SC-to-MR-HAN migration guidance, while warning that installation compatibility must be checked rather than assumed.

  • Original matching amplifier: MR-SC20
  • Motor rated current: 4.2 A peak-to-peak; approximately 1.5 A RMS
  • Encoder: 2000 pulses/revolution
  • Feedback pulse value used by HA-SC positioning calculations: 8000 pulses/revolution
  • Feedback output: FPA/FPB quadrature plus OP pulse in the original system
  • Control modes: Position, speed, and torque control through the compatible servo amplifier
  • Shaft radial load limit: 176 N at L = 30 mm
  • Shaft thrust load limit: 147 N at L = 30 mm
  • Recommended shaft alignment: Difference between maximum and minimum measured shaft-core alignment should be no more than 0.05 mm
  • Operating ambient temperature: 0 to 40°C under the documented installation conditions
  • HA-SC motor thermal protection: The original manual states that the HA-SC motor does not have the thermal protector used by the HA-SA motor; the amplifier’s G1-G2 arrangement therefore differs.

Motor/Drive Compatibility

The original Mitsubishi documentation associates:

  • HA- → MR-SC20
  • HA-SC13 → MR-SC10
  • HA-SC43 → MR-SC40
  • HA-SC63 → MR-SC60

That relationship matters during replacement. An HA- should not be treated as a generic 200 W servo motor simply because another manufacturer’s motor has similar power and speed ratings. The encoder and drive feedback system are part of the motion-control loop.

Global Sourcing & Live-Test SOP

For a used or surplus , visual inspection should come before any electrical test.

1. Inbound verification

  • Photograph the complete nameplate before cleaning.
  • Confirm the marking reads , not HA-SC13, HA-SC43, or another HA-SC variant.
  • Record serial number and manufacturing information.
  • Check the motor connector for bent pins, oxidation, cracked insulation, or evidence of forced insertion.
  • Inspect the encoder housing carefully; Mitsubishi specifically warns against mechanical shock to the encoder during handling.
  • Check the shaft, keyway, seal area, flange, and mounting holes for impact or corrosion.
  • If sold as OEM surplus, retain available factory documentation and traceable purchase paperwork.

2. Electrical and feedback verification

  • Verify winding continuity and phase-to-phase resistance against a controlled reference before connecting the motor to an amplifier.
  • Perform insulation testing using a procedure appropriate for the motor and encoder electronics; do not megger directly through sensitive feedback circuitry.
  • Verify encoder A/B/OP feedback with suitable instrumentation or the matched amplifier.
  • Check for intermittent encoder signals while slowly rotating the shaft by hand.

3. Matched-drive simulation

When possible, test the HA- with the correct MR-SC20 amplifier or an approved migration configuration.

  • Confirm motor-type parameter selection.
  • Verify command direction at low speed.
  • Check servo-ready and alarm status.
  • Confirm feedback count.
  • Check positioning repeatability under a controlled load.
  • Monitor current and abnormal vibration during acceleration and deceleration.

4. Extended run

A controlled heat run should include repeated acceleration/deceleration cycles rather than simply allowing the shaft to spin unloaded. Monitor bearing noise, housing temperature, encoder stability, following error, and amplifier alarms.

5. Final preparation

Record the tested amplifier configuration, motor type, encoder behavior, observed current, mechanical condition, and test date. Package the encoder and connector area against impact and electrostatic damage.

Field Engineer’s Pitfall Guide

❗ 1. Do not substitute the amplifier by wattage alone

A 200 W servo amplifier from another Mitsubishi generation is not automatically compatible with the . The original HA- pairing is the MR-SC20. Feedback scaling, motor identification, command interface, and parameter structure all matter. Mitsubishi’s own migration documentation also treats the HA- as a specific motor/drive combination rather than a generic 200 W motor.

❗ 2. The HA- does not use the same thermal-protector arrangement as HA-SA motors

This is an easy retrofit mistake. Mitsubishi states that the HA-SC motor does not have the thermal protector used on HA-SA motors. The G1-G2 connection therefore has to follow the HA-SC wiring instructions; copying the wiring from an HA-SA motor can create an incorrect protection circuit.

❗ 3. Shaft loading and encoder handling are not minor details

For the HA-, Mitsubishi specifies a 176 N radial load and 147 N thrust load at a 30 mm load distance. The manual also calls for shaft-core alignment within 0.05 mm and warns against impact to the encoder. A motor can pass a simple unloaded rotation test and still fail once installed on a misaligned coupling or excessive belt load.

Intent-Driven FAQ

Is the Mitsubishi HA- a servo motor or an ordinary AC motor?

It is an AC brushless servo motor from Mitsubishi’s MELSERVO-SC family. It requires the appropriate servo amplifier and feedback connection for closed-loop operation.

What amplifier was originally matched to the HA-?

The original Mitsubishi documentation identifies the MR-SC20 as the corresponding amplifier for HA-.

What is the rated power and speed of the HA-?

The HA- is rated at 200 W and 3000 r/min. Its documented motor current is 4.2 A peak-to-peak, approximately 1.5 A RMS.

What encoder does the HA- use?

The HA-SC motor documentation specifies a 2000 P/R encoder. Within the original servo system, the HA-SC feedback is represented as 8000 pulses per motor revolution for positioning calculations.

Can I replace an HA- with a newer Mitsubishi motor?

Not as a blind drop-in. Mitsubishi’s migration FAQ identifies HC-MF23 as the current motor replacement reference for HA-, but it specifically notes that installation compatibility must be checked. Mechanical dimensions, connector arrangement, feedback system, amplifier, and machine parameters should all be verified before migration.

Is the HA- safe to hot-swap?

No. Treat the motor and amplifier as a powered-down motion-control system. Remove power, verify the DC bus has discharged according to the drive’s safety procedure, and then disconnect the motor/feedback wiring. The HA- should never be connected or disconnected while its servo amplifier is energized.
