ABB | REG630 | PROTECTION RELAY CONTROLLER

REG630 Protection Relay Controller Introduction

1. Product Overview

REG630 is a numerical multifunctional protection and control relay developed for generator units, covering small, medium and large synchronous generators as well as generator-transformer blocks. It integrates full-set generator protection, electrical measurement, breaker control, condition monitoring, fault recording and programmable logic into one single panel-mounted device. The relay adopts modular hardware design, allowing flexible configuration of I/O channels, communication ports and auxiliary monitoring modules according to actual generator capacity and station layout. It is suitable for installation inside indoor control cabinets with IP20 protection rating, and widely deployed in thermal power plants, hydropower stations, distributed diesel generator stations and industrial self-owned power plants.

2. Hardware Structure and Interfaces

The unit features standard embedded panel mounting structure with a front-mounted human-machine interface. The front panel is equipped with a high-resolution LCD screen, multi-function operation buttons and multiple status LED indicators. The display supports real-time electrical value viewing, single-line diagram display, protection parameter setting, fault event browsing and disturbance waveform playback. LED lamps separately indicate power supply status, protection alarm signals, trip actions, communication faults and breaker position feedback.
Rear side consists of multiple isolated terminal blocks classified by function: CT/PT analog input terminals, RTD temperature measurement terminals, binary input terminals, relay output terminals, auxiliary power terminals and multi-type communication ports. All analog signal circuits are galvanically isolated to resist electromagnetic interference from high-voltage switchgear and excitation equipment. The built-in relay outputs provide dry contact signals for breaker tripping, alarm signalling and equipment interlock, with trip circuit supervision function to monitor the integrity of breaking control loops continuously. Optional plug-in communication modules support electrical and optical communication media to adapt to different substation automation architectures.

3. Main Electrical Specifications

  • Auxiliary power supply: Wide-range AC/DC universal input compatible with standard station control power sources
  • Current input: Supports 1A or 5A secondary CT signals
  • Voltage input: Matches standard 100V secondary PT circuits for generator terminal voltage measurement
  • Temperature monitoring: Expandable RTD input channels for stator winding, rotor and bearing temperature monitoring
  • Binary input channels: Multi-channel passive voltage detection inputs for collecting breaker, disconnector and external fault contact signals
  • Output contacts: Galvanically isolated electromagnetic relay contacts for control and signal transmission
  • Sampling unit: High-speed digital signal processor for high-precision calculation of symmetrical components, harmonics and power parameters
  • Operating temperature range: -20°C to +70°C for continuous cabinet operation
  • Built-in surge suppression and short-circuit protection for secondary wiring loops

4. Core Integrated Functions

4.1 Full Generator Protection Functions

Complete protection suite dedicated to synchronous generators and generator-transformer blocks: stator phase overcurrent, stator earth fault protection with directional discrimination, negative sequence overcurrent for unbalanced load, thermal overload protection with thermal memory curve, rotor earth fault protection, loss of excitation protection, reverse power protection, overvoltage and undervoltage protection, overfrequency and underfrequency protection, out-of-step protection, stator overload protection and startup supervision. Additional backup protection for the connected transformer block can be enabled via parameter configuration. All protection elements support adjustable delay curves, blocking logic and multi-group setting switching for different operating conditions.

4.2 Measurement and Condition Monitoring

Real-time measurement of three-phase currents, line voltages, phase voltages, zero-sequence current and voltage, active power, reactive power, apparent power, power factor and system frequency. The device records maximum and minimum demand values, accumulates forward and reverse electric energy, and captures temperature data from RTD sensors for thermal monitoring. A built-in disturbance recorder automatically stores voltage and current waveforms before and after fault occurrence, together with time-stamped event logs of protection startups, trip actions and switch position changes for post-fault analysis. It also monitors breaker operation counts to evaluate contact wear status.

4.3 Control and Programmable Logic

Embedded programmable logic function supports custom sequential control, equipment interlock and automatic operating sequence logic, reducing external auxiliary relay wiring. It provides local and remote switching authority for generator circuit breakers and isolating switches. The trip circuit supervision function detects broken trip coil wiring in real time and sends out alarm signals once abnormality is found. Users can customize the single-line mimic diagram displayed on the front screen to match the primary circuit layout of the generator system.

4.4 Communication Capabilities

Multiple independent communication channels are available for horizontal inter-device data exchange and vertical connection with upper monitoring systems. Optical communication options eliminate electromagnetic interference for long-distance transmission. Supported functions include remote reading of real-time measurements, fault records and disturbance waveforms, remote modification of protection setting groups, and remote interrogation of equipment status. The relay supports standard industrial and substation communication protocols to fit mainstream automation systems.

5. Typical Application Scenarios

  1. Small, medium and large synchronous generator sets in thermal power plants, hydropower stations and gas power stations
  2. Combined generator-transformer blocks connected to medium and high voltage power grids
  3. Distributed diesel generator sets and industrial self-generation power stations
  4. Cogeneration power plants and renewable energy complementary power generation units
  5. Power station control cabinets requiring integrated generator protection, measurement and automation control

6. Basic On-site Fault Troubleshooting

  • Power indicator off: Loss of auxiliary power supply, loose wiring or internal power circuit damage
  • Protection trip indicator illuminated: Generator internal faults or abnormal operating conditions such as loss of excitation, reverse power, earth fault or thermal overload; specific fault data and timestamps can be retrieved from the local display
  • Communication link abnormal: Damaged communication cables, mismatched communication addresses or incorrect protocol parameter settings
  • Abnormal temperature readings: Broken RTD sensor wiring, short-circuited temperature channels or damaged temperature probes
  • Signal jitter frequently occurring: Insufficient cable shielding, inadequate circuit isolation or strong electromagnetic interference from nearby excitation transformers and switchgear
