Description
PTU810A (Termination Base for the PDP800) is a dedicated module installation base/terminal backplane in the ABB Symphony Plus SD series I/O system. Its core function is to provide mechanical installation support and electrical signal connection for the PDP800A Profibus DP gateway module, and is an indispensable physical interface layer for connecting the fieldbus and controller.
core positioning
PTU810A itself does not execute any control algorithms and does not process process process data. It is a printed circuit board installed in the Symphony Plus controller I/O rack, serving as the “base” for the PDP800A module. The on-site cables (connecting Profibus slave devices such as smart transmitters, actuators, and motor control centers) are first terminated on the wiring terminals of PTU810A, and then the PDP800A module is “click” into the base through a snap fit, without the need to disconnect the on-site wiring during maintenance or module replacement, greatly simplifying on-site operations. PTU810A is designed for redundant configuration, and one base can simultaneously install a pair of redundant PDP800A modules.
Physical specifications
The dimensions are 193.04mm wide, 243.84mm high, and 76.2mm deep (approximately 7.6 inches x 9.6 inches x 3.0 inches). There are two versions: PTU810A is the standard version, and PTU810A Coated is the version with conformal coating, which is used for protection in high humidity, high corrosion, or dusty environments. Net weight of approximately 0.3~0.5kg, installed in standard DIN rails or rack panels. The onboard LED indicator lights display real-time power status, communication activity, and fault conditions, and support hot swapping.
Electrical and communication functions

ABB PTU810A Termination base for the PDP800
PTU810A provides the following key interfaces for the PDP800A module:
Power distribution: The 24V DC power supply from the rack backplane is allocated to the PDP800A module by channel, with each channel equipped with independent overcurrent protection (OCP). A single short circuit does not affect the operation of the other module.
Profibus DP bus interface: Provides RJ45 or DB9 connectors, supports Profibus DP V0/V1/V2 protocols, automatically adapts transmission rates from 9.6kbps to 12Mbps, and supports up to 125 slave devices. Profibus PA field devices (such as pressure transmitters, temperature transmitters, and other intrinsic safety devices) can be connected through the DP/PA link.
Fiber optic expansion interface: Supports placing Profibus I/O modules and field devices up to 15 kilometers away from PDP800A through fiber optic media. Through redundant HN800 fiber optic communication, the distance between PDP800A module and controller can reach 3 kilometers.
Electrical isolation: The base achieves electrical isolation of no less than 2.5kV between the bus side, I/O side, and field side, with overvoltage protection (OVP), undervoltage protection (UVP), overcurrent protection (OCP), and surge protection.
Redundancy capability
PTU810A supports PDP800A module level full redundancy, including module redundancy, power redundancy, Profibus DP link redundancy, and controller communication bus (HN800) redundancy. All redundancy options are independent of each other, ensuring a system availability rate of over 99.9%. When the main PDP800A module fails, the redundant module seamlessly takes over within 50ms without interrupting the Profibus network.
Role in the system
PTU810A is a component of the Symphony Plus SD series I/O architecture and belongs to the same system platform as modules such as PDP800A, S800 I/O, and HPC800 (turbine control). In the S+Engineering engineering tool, a unified device description file is imported, which supports the use of Device Type Manager (DTM) technology to configure, debug, and maintain Profibus devices, automatically calculate network load, and generate channel configurations.
Typical Applications
Mainly used for generator excitation control and unit monitoring in the power industry (thermal power, gas turbine, hydropower), intelligent transmitter and actuator integration in the petrochemical industry, motor control center (MCC) and intelligent electronic device (IED) access in the metallurgical industry, as well as continuous process industries such as water and paper that require Profibus DP communication. In the brownfield renovation project, the PTU810A+PDP800A combination can seamlessly integrate the old system into the Symphony Plus controller without replacing the existing Profibus field equipment.
