What is Arduino ?
Arduino is an open-source hardware/software programming platform based on Atmel microcontrollers. Open source means that the circuit schematics and software source code used in the design are freely available, and enthusiasts can modify them. The Arduino development board, with its analog and digital inputs and outputs, is ideal for artists, designers, and electronics hobbyists who want to assemble a system without extensive digital design knowledge. Input and output signals are provided on the Arduino board using a row of concave connectors , which can be inserted as single leads or single-in-line (SIL) connectors.
The Arduino development board will have at least the following features:
Nine digital pins can be used as input/output channels. Some of these can be configured as PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) outputs. A PWM signal is a square wave whose pulse width can be varied. PWM is used for speed and position control of motors and servos in robotics and remote control applications.
Four analog input channels.
At least one serial port can also be used to download code to the Arduino.
Some boards also have a series of analog output channels.
The pins offer high flexibility in functionality, with some pins configurable as either analog or digital. Digital pins can be configured as either inputs or outputs.
When Arduino boards receive input from sensors connected to these analog and digital inputs, they sense their surroundings. They can also control actuators such as motors, alarms, and electric valves, or turn on LEDs, lights, or other visual indicators. The outputs have limited drive capability, so transistors , FETs, or relays must typically be used between the Arduino output pins and the driven device. However, there is one output that can directly drive an LED.
The connectors on the board are arranged in a standard manner to allow for the connection of shields. Shields are modules with dedicated functions (e.g., infrared output, Bluetooth , GSM, WIFI, Ethernet , motor on/off control using Relas, stepper motor control). Depending on the type of shield, multiple shields may be stacked together and then addressed individually via an I2C serial bus.
Because the Arduino code and hardware are open source, third-party developers have created copies of the official Arduino development board.
The Arduino development board has 32 to 512k of flash memory for program storage.
Leonardo – A specific model of Arduino development board. Digital pins can be configured as inputs or outputs. In addition to standard analog inputs, several digital pins can also function as analog inputs.
