Description

ABB NPBU-42C PPCS BRANCHING UNIT 64011821D

NPBU-42C (material number 64011821D) is a 4-channel fiber optic branching unit in the ABB PPCS (Process and Power Control System) architecture, belonging to the communication infrastructure module of the ACS 600/ACS 800 MultiDrive frequency converter system. Its core function is to implement signal branching and distribution on the PPCS fiber optic module bus, ensuring real-time and deterministic data synchronization between multiple parallel running frequency converters.

core positioning

The module itself does not execute any control algorithms, nor does it collect or output process signals, but exists as a branch node in the PPCS fiber optic communication network. It distributes PPCS communication signals on the main fiber optic bus to up to 4 downstream branches, enabling multiple ACS 600 or ACS 800 frequency converters to simultaneously access the same fiber optic backbone network, achieving high-speed parallel control at the driver level. Compared with NPBU-41, NPBU-42 is its direct replacement model, and the wiring method has been changed from dedicated connectors to screw terminals for direct connection, making installation easier.

Communication and Topology

NPBU-42C operates based on the PPCS fiber ring network protocol and supports the following topology structures: simple ring, duplex chain (up to 200 network segments), and dual fiber ring network redundancy. When any fiber optic failure occurs, the system can rebuild the communication link within 10ms, and automatically recover after troubleshooting without manual intervention. Fiber optic transmission rate of 10 Mbit, supporting multimode fiber (850nm/1310nm, transmission distance up to 2km) and single-mode fiber (1310nm/1550nm, transmission distance up to 20km), with SC optical interface as standard. Used as a standard communication component in frameworks such as ACS 600 XT500 and ACS 600 XT690.

I/O and Logic Functions

Although the main function of NPBU-42C is communication branch, its onboard logic supports rich I/O configurations: up to 16 digital inputs (DI) and 32 digital outputs (DO), which can be configured as alarm outputs, event triggers, timing logic (timers), contour step waiting logic, and defrost/redundant logic. This means that it is not only a communication node, but also can be used as a field logic control unit to undertake local interlocking and status monitoring tasks in parallel frequency converter systems.

Electrical Characteristics

The working power supply is 24V DC. The module implements electrical isolation between the bus side and the system side, effectively blocking the impact of on-site grounding circuits and transient interference on the controller. Equipped with overvoltage protection, overcurrent protection, and surge protection. Automatically detect the electrical ID of the module when powered on, and refuse to enter the running state when it does not match the system configuration, to prevent communication errors caused by mismatches.

Physical specifications

Weighing approximately 0.97kg, originating from Finland. Adopting a compact design, it is compatible with standard DIN rails for installation inside the control cabinet. The onboard LED indicator lights display real-time power status, communication activity, fault conditions, and redundancy synchronization status, making it easy to quickly locate problems on site. Supports hot swapping and can be replaced without interrupting communication when the PPCS network is powered on.

Typical Applications

Mainly used in situations that require multiple frequency converters to operate in parallel and synchronously: fan and water pump group control in the power industry, parallel drive of compressors in the petrochemical industry, coordination of main and auxiliary drives in rolling mills in the metallurgical industry, and any ACS 600/ACS 800 system that requires real-time synchronization of multiple drives through PPCS fiber optic ring network. When using ASXR7140 and above versions of software, NPBU needs to manually select and configure after the software is loaded.
